Industrial Design: Design of goods intended to be produced by factory, using serial machinery (Treccani, free translation)
Let’s start from this encyclopedic definition of design, as it is written on the italian encyclopedia Treccani: this is the traditional meaning of the word, intended as industrial design.
According to this definition, the designer is someone who designs goods for a factory that produces them for the mass market. Indeed, this is almost what it’s teached in italian design schools, at least during the first three years. In other words, it is what we’d call today product design, if we want to specify it better, according to the increasing number of apposition for the “design” word.
